The Seventh Seal

In the last week, the weather has been very variable. Every other day, there is a good weather window to clock up some sea miles to the next destination, but then 30 knot squalls dominate for the following day.

Saturday was one of those days, so we got out the bikes, took Bodilla the free ferry over to Fårö island, and went exploring.

The island is very rural and unspoiled. It has a population of only a few hundred, mainly farming, and dodging black sheep on the roads is a major activity. There are huge numbers of tourists in the summer, and the little car ferry goes back and forth 24 hours a day!

Ingmar Bergman fell in love with the island, and made many films here, eventually building a house on the island. He is buried here in a pretty churchyard along with the last of his many wives, Ingrid (no relation).

So we visited the Ingmar Bergman centre to find out more. It was really interesting, with photography from the film sets, locals involved in his productions, and extracts from films, in particular the iconic Seventh Seal, where Death plays a game of chess with a knight trying to distract him from taking his life. It did not end well.

Tomorrow we are leaving at 5am to cross to Latvia, and hoping not to meet a man in a black robe with a scythe along the way.
