Snakeing through the islands

Archipelago Blog

There is a fabulous peaceful anchorage hidden away between the rocks on an island wildlife reserve on Biskopson.

The entrance is narrow, shallow, surrounded by rocks and the channel twists and swerves for a mile or so before arriving at the far end in a lagoon, with low rolling granite islets all around.

There were two other boats anchored there and we decided on a swim, and to explore the land by inflatable canoe for a good place, perhaps for a barbecue.

The calm was interrupted by a large helicopter ambulance which flew overhead and landed on the rocks beside us. A little dinghy rowed out from one of the boats, picked up a paramedic and rowed back to the other boat. They then came across to us and explained that the husband on board had been bitten by a viper on the island, and warned us to ‘wear our rubber boots ashore’. We quickly decided to cook spaghetti on board. Rubber boots did not really reassure.

The patient was taken to hospital with a drip visible as they rowed him out to the waiting helicopter. His wife waited on board overnight, and her daughter was delivered by a rerouted ferry the following day, to help sail the boat home. As we left, we asked how he was and everything was fine. But quite a shock.

Apparently there are lots of snakes in this area, and although they usually avoid people, their bites often require hospital treatment. A warning to be careful.

  1. Cowards – you should have barbecued on the rocks 🙂

Impressed by Swedish efficiency, even in the wilds they got it sorted, presumably there was a phone signal too.

    Looks beautiful.
