Söderköping

Our time in the Archipelago is over and we are on our way across Sweden from East to West via the Göta Canal. In most places it is about 3m deep in the middle, so we should be OK!

There are 58 locks to climb and descend, bridges to pass under, and many that open to let us through. There are also some lakes to cross – one bigger than Northern Ireland. It’s great fun!

First stop after practicing our technique in a few upward-going locks, was Söderköping, a lovely old town with a thriving tourism industry, (and great ice cream along the canal).

We walked around the old streets with their wooden painted houses and found a local museum, which had an amazing display of model villages, all showing the town through the ages.

The most recent was from 1950. We asked the curator who had created the models, and he told us proudly that it was him, Lars Lindh.

Lars kindly agreed to pose for a photo, and if you look carefully you can see a model of Lars himself surveying his work, it looks really like him!

He also pointed out three children in the street – himself outside his father’s shop, looking at his future wife and her brother – so sweet.

  1. Just like the Crinan canal. Glad to hear that you will not have to take the mast down.
I am green with envy . Wish I had done that. I remember sailing off Stockholm in the Archpeligo. I was visiting a prospective customer who said let’s go sailing for the weekend. Magic place.

Am going sailing on Tyger tomorrow to La Rochelle just for a week.

I would like to invite you to London to give a talk to my Yacht club. The Little Ship Club. The pay is very good you get a dinner, a present and free membership for a year.
