The Great Escape

Blog Gota

Early morning and only a few locks to go to the end of our journey through the Göta Canal.

The 10:25 train to Lyrestad was due to pass so we tied up to a wooden jetty to wait for the bridge to open.

William had decided to reposition a fender – and there it was, drifting away from the boat to the opposite bank.

With great presence of mind, Ian grabbed a boat hook and set off towards the railway bridge. He had nine minutes to cross the tracks on foot, fish out the fender from the reeds

and get back to the boat before the bridge opened.

Oh, yes, and avoid getting run over by the 10:25 to Lyrestad

Hero of the day and just in time to get through the bridge while it was still open!
