Three days in Goteborg in a nice but tight harbour, while we waited to welcome our new crew Anthony and Janet. They arrived in a thunderstorm, bearing ‘Mrs Woodman’s Sustaining Ocean Cake’ in a Melodrama tin, a bottle of whisky with a recipe for a ‘Melo Dram’ – yum!, and some tea bags of course.
Off we set for nearby Styrsö island with daughter Hannah, who lives close by, as our tour guide.
It was a lovely day, tied up in a pretty fishing harbour and walking on the island rocks.
In the morning we waved Janet off on the island ferry and set off for Monsterudde.
Would you like lunch? Asked Anthony. Expecting the usual cheese sandwiches we readily agreed. Soon delicious aromas of frying onions wafted from the galley.
And upon arrival at our anchorage a smorgasbord was laid out below. Prawns in mayonnaise, and Mr Gerrard’s Midnight Temptation.
This most delicious concoction consists of rye pumpernickel bread, with sweet pickled herring and curry mayonnaise, topped with crispy caramelised onions. Utterly mouthwatering.
Apparently, Mr Gerrard owned a small Danish restaurant in Edinburgh and would slip down to the kitchens when he couldn’t sleep to prepare himself a little something.
And here is Mrs Woodman’s fruit cake recipe, courtesy of her neighbours Paul Heiney and Libby Purves.
Do you have the rest of the recipe? (what to do with all that flour, butter, etc?)
Well, on a boat it’s pretty much chuck it all in a bowl and stir, transfer to some available cake shaped pot, chuck that in the gas oven at an uncontrollable temperature and hope for the best!
Sorry – realise there must be at least two ‘Ruths’ on this mailing and so you must have been really confused by the last reply. So basically to answer question – whisk up all the butter, sugar , flour, eggs, then add the rest and bake at 160 for about 2 hours
Will bring you a ‘puppy walking sustaining cake’ and the next bit of recipe next time we meet up , Ruth x x
the Barra Brith (sp?) is a very good substitute – thanks Janet! Rxx
PS have just read this blog entry and so that’s why I was a bit vague about the cake when we saw you!
Danish “smörrebröd” mmmm, is fantastic.
