Wriggling through the islands

Blog Denmark 2019

It’s been a week since we were finally able to leave Augustenborg, and begin our passage east. The weather has been great. Bright and sunny, with a cool breeze, just right for our first few days. You know, when we remember, post-incident, how we did something to avoid the problem we have just encountered. Again.

First stop was a little sailing club in Dyvig, where we spent the night, and woke up to swallows all over the rigging. Very sweet, and we cleared up the mess later!

Fåborg was a lovely old town to wander around, with old timbered buildings, and cobbled lanes.

From there we made our way through a narrow channel, much like the Kyles of Bute, both in its tidal flow, and expensive shoreside housing, and on across the shipping lanes, trying to avoid big ships coming towards us!

We spent the night on the lovely private island of Vejrø, a change from the boat clubs and fishing harbours we have been using. The island is an organic farm and has an airstrip and a helipad to bring customers to its very pricy restaurant and holiday cottages.

But having paid the pricy harbour fee, we took advantage of free bikes and rode round the island, chasing hundreds of hares, pheasants, deer, ducks and geese as we rode along, passing the very elegant glass houses growing interesting things for the menu. In the morning, we treated ourselves to the very upmarket showers and laundry facilities – well, we had to get our money’s worth!
