No Weather for Sailing

Blog Estonia

Three days in Kardla, with a strong easterly gale, dramatic lightning and thunder, and torrential rain – what’s not to like!

The young harbour master and his staff were very disappointed that they had no Irish flag for our visit, and insisted that we must come back on our way home, and they would definitely have one by then.

It looked like it was drying up, and we got out the bikes and cycled to the local history museum, in an old wooden long house that used to be the home of the owner of the woollen mill, and read about the history of the only business in the small town.

As we left, the skies opened with buckets of rain, lightning overhead that caused thunder like explosions. We ducked back inside to wait it out.

The museum curator took us to a little conservatory at the back of the building, where we had coffee and watched the weather, until it was safe to cycle back the the harbour through the puddles.

In the evening we joined Jeanette and Wolfgang for a meal (duck and spinach) in Kuur, the harbour cafe, which has a great reputation, definitely deserved. I was even given a pot of home made blueberry compôte to take back to the boat.

And there – flying from the harbour flagpole – an Irish flag! The guys in the harbour-master’s office had big grins on their faces when we told them we’d noticed.

‘I don’t know where he got it from’, said the junior harbour mate, ‘I’m as amazed as you!’

We love this country!!

  1. Sounds like you’re having an amazing trip! Great that you’ve been made so welcome

  2. By the look of things you are on the boundary of two weather systems, so hopefully in the next few days you will get clear skies and some decent wind.

  3. Nice to see that you have good times even if the weather not is good. But I must say you missed something when you rejected the sauna. It is great, sitting in the hot sauna and then dive into the cold water. We are in Lymington waiting for good wind to Alderny.

    1. Ah Barbro, we enjoyed the sauna – but not the beating with birch branches!

But … then we saw them for sale in a shop and bought a bunch, so next time it is sauna, swim and a good thrashing too!! That will be a surprise for our new crew, haha.
