Banged up in Tallinn

Blog Estonia

So, Melodrama made her way into the Port Ops zone of the capital city of Estonia, Tallinn. It’s a beautiful, UNESCO protected medieval city, and one of the big destinations for cruise ships. Combined with the commercial tankers, cargo, and container ships coming and going, it made for very busy waters, closely policed by harbour officials.

Within minutes, we were boarded, handcuffed and led off to the town square, where the judge was sitting in session to charge us with grievous international flag violation.

Outside, a crowd had gathered around the parliament buildings where medieval chains have been left attached to the walls for criminals to be restrained and heckled for the duration of their sentence.

…..or so some would have us believe…..

We spent four lovely days, relaxing in sunny cafes, cycling, and joined a great historical walking tour – free! – led by Riina, a jolly student who entertained with stories, and the history of Estonia and Tallinn.

She was exceptionally proud of her country, its place in Europe, the opportunities that her generation has as part of the EU, and it was fascinating to hear of centuries of occupation – by Sweden, Denmark, Czarist Russia, Germany, USSR, and gaining becoming an independent nation in 1918, only to lose it again during the 2nd World War, and be handed to the Russians until modern independence in 1991.

Last night we stayed on Naissaare island, a former off-limits USSR station, where mines were manufactured. These days it is a pretty hiking island, with sandy beaches, and the relics of the old Russian base lie derelict. A new harbour is being built for tourist visitors from the mainland and passing sailors.

We have absolutely loved Estonia, its land, sailing waters, its people, and little towns. We have had such a warm welcome, from friendly, helpful locals, and we will miss it.

And the Irish Ensign flew everywhere – just for us.

  1. So glad you’ve enjoyed Estonia. It’s such a lovely country. Where to next????

  2. Bravo Karen and William! We did notice all had gone a bit quiet and wondered if you were under arrest! But hey,
that Irish confidence to brave the port traffic in Tallin (which I also remember warmly) and the veiled – or not so veiled – threats about the ensign, the handcuffs, the chaining .. paid off.. so glad it has been a happy, sunny, successful time .. now onwards on the passage of your lives. Rxx
