Waning in Waxholm

Blog

Waxholm, we are still only in Waxholm.

Shortly after arriving here last Thursday we gauged that a little weep from a seal on the engine cooling water pump was rapidly turning into a bit of a gush. Given that there was a local Volvo service engineer, we got him to take a look. His recommendation was a new pump, as they are notoriously difficult to service in situ. (We can keep the old pump and have it refurbished over the winter as a spare).

He hoped he could get one for Saturday, but failing that Monday. Sadly Monday turned into Tuesday, and Tuesday was a national holiday, so that became Wednesday. When it failed to arrive on Wednesday, it was traced to the wrong delivery address, and has now been diverted. So it will be here later today, or maybe on Friday. Sigh.

I like Waxholm, but maybe not this much! We’ve done all the laundry, cleaned the boat, polished the deck, varnished the cockpit table, and replanned our days ahead several times.

We were supposed to be taking part in a Cruising Association rally with a dozen of so other boats in the vicinity, but they remain an elusive 70 miles away. Now, we will be lucky to join in for the end of rally dinner on Sunday. Well, that’s the life of going cruising. Expect the unexpected. And if possible, enjoy it!

  1. Janet has similar feelings about Brightlingsea. Lovely place, but not for an extended engine breakdown with three young children! Hope the part arrives and all is well.
