A week in the Skargard

Archipelago Blog

We have a fantastic pilot guidebook to the Swedish Archipelago. On a large map of the entire area hundreds of little coves and harbours are marked and numbered. In the guidebook each of these is described in detail, with an aerial photograph, a small chart showing hazards and depths, and information on where to tie to the rocks, where to anchor, and what facilities are available on shore. All in Swedish, but that adds to the fun.

So we’ve had lots of fun, choosing a little bay, and sailing to it, then making sense of the landscape with the guide. Every one of them so far has been idyllic.

On Fjardlang, there was a long walk along a landlocked fjord, where it was easy to see how the rocks drop steeply, and how stepping off the bow of your boat onto a rocky shore just might work. The Swedes love it! We are still a bit timid …..

In Storon, a local called Eric had provided a floating sauna, which our neighbours had booked for an evening steam and splash. There was even an axe to cut wood to burn.

And this afternoon we are anchored in Agno, very sheltered from the stiff breeze after a great sail with two reefs, sailing through between the rocks and islands, where only a few weeks ago we would have motored slowly through, with our eyes darting nervously to the chartplotter and depth sounder every moment.
